PVDF UF (Ultrafiltration) Filter — Function and Role
A PVDF (Polyvinylidene Fluoride) UF filter is a high-performance ultrafiltration membrane made from polyvinylidene fluoride. It is widely used in water treatment as a highly efficient physical barrier, operating with a typical pore size of 0.01 to 0.1 microns.
Core Separation Function
The PVDF UF membrane uses physical sieving driven by low operating pressure (typically 0.1–0.3 MPa / 15–45 psi). It effectively removes:
• Suspended solids (SS) and turbidity
• Colloids and fine particles
• Bacteria and viruses
• Algae, protozoa (such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia), and parasites
• High-molecular-weight organic compounds
Key Advantages of PVDF Material
PVDF is chosen for its exceptional material properties:
• High Mechanical Strength: Resists breaking or stretching under high pressure or during backwashing.
• Excellent Chemical Resistance: Highly tolerant to oxidizing agents (such as chlorine), strong acids, and bases. This allows for aggressive chemical cleaning (CIP) and extends the membrane's lifespan.

• High Anti-Fouling Property: PVDF membranes are typically modified to be hydrophilic (water-loving), which reduces organic and biological fouling and maintains stable permeate flow.
• Long Service Life: Due to its strength and chemical stability, PVDF membranes generally last longer than PES or PAN membranes in harsh environments.
Practical Role in Water Treatment Systems
• RO Pretreatment: The most common role is as a pre-treatment for Reverse Osmosis (RO) systems. It protects the downstream RO membranes from fouling and damage, significantly extending RO membrane life.
• Turbidity Reduction: It reduces feed water turbidity to below 0.1 NTU, ensuring high-quality water.
• Bacteria Removal: Provides a physical disinfection barrier (often >99.99% bacteria removal), reducing the need for chemical disinfectants.
• Wastewater Reuse: Used in municipal and industrial wastewater treatment for solid-liquid separation and water recycling.

Note on Limitations:
A UF filter does not remove dissolved salts, heavy metals, or low-molecular-weight organic compounds. Therefore, it is almost always used in combination with RO or nanofiltration (NF) systems when desalination is required.
